Straight answers. When 3dSynth is the wrong tool, this page says so. A shorter subset also appears on the homepage.
Does 3dSynth replace a slicer?
No. It is a generative toolpath and mesh workspace, not a general STL slicer. G-code Sculptor and other direct-G-code modules can write vase, spiral, or specialized paths without sending that path through another slicer. Mesh Sculptor and Texturize export STL for PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Cura, Bambu Studio, and the rest. Use your usual slicer for multi-part plates, supports, and conventional infill.
Does 3dSynth generate G-code directly?
Yes, for modules that own the toolpath: G-code Sculptor, SynthBlocks (Premium export), Node Sculptor in toolpath mode, Fabric Sculpt, Hex Grid, Predefined models, and Custom G-code. See direct G-code.
Which 3D printers work with 3dSynth?
Hundreds of built-in FDM machine profiles. Output is standard G-code plus that profile’s start and end scripts. We do not warrant every printer. Clay and plotter dialects exist in Print settings when the job is not filament. You are responsible for verifying G-code on your hardware.
Can 3dSynth export STL?
Yes. Mesh Sculptor and Texturize export STL as the primary product. G-code Sculptor and some other modules can export a mesh of the preview path (STL / OBJ / glTF) where the export caps allow. That mesh is not a sliced plate.
Can I edit existing G-code?
Yes. Open it in Custom G-code: editor, 3D preview, analysis, and playback. You can often inspect G-code generated elsewhere.
Does 3dSynth work in the browser?
Yes. The free web app runs in a modern desktop browser. No account is required for core use. A Premium license also unlocks desktop builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux (Linux currently ships as tar.gz).
Is an account required?
No. License keys (Premium) are stored locally. Publishing to the community library uses your license key and optional email—not a 3dSynth user account.
Can I use it offline?
The web app needs a network. After you activate Premium on the desktop app, it runs offline. Docs and assets ship in the desktop bundle.
What is the difference between Mesh Sculptor and G-code Sculptor?
G-code Sculptor designs the nozzle path from a profile and effects; it exports G-code. Mesh Sculptor designs a solid from a profile and cross-section; it exports STL for a slicer. Texturize displaces an existing mesh without being the body modeler.
What is the difference between Node Sculptor and SynthBlocks?
Both can drive G-code. Node Sculptor is a typed node graph (more like Grasshopper). SynthBlocks is Scratch-style blocks. Node export is available on Free; SynthBlocks export and save are Premium. Pick the mental model you prefer.
Is 3dSynth suitable for normal multi-part CAD models?
No. Use Fusion, SolidWorks, or Blender for assemblies, fittings, and mechanical CAD. 3dSynth is for procedural geometry and direct control of printing paths.
When should I use my normal slicer instead?
Whenever you need conventional slicing: supports, tree supports, multi-object plates, variable line width from a mesh, or a workflow your printer vendor’s slicer already owns. Bring 3dSynth STL or G-code into that tool when it helps; do not force 3dSynth to replace it.
Can I use it commercially?
Yes. A Premium license includes personal and commercial use of the software. You keep the designs and G-code you create. See Terms.
How many devices does a license cover?
Devices you own or primarily use, web and desktop, with the same key. Do not share the key. Details: Terms and activating your license.
Is the G-code “safe”?
Start/end sequences follow the selected machine profile. Preview the path in 3D. Export still enforces the collision buffer even when the viewport preview skips it. You remain responsible for the print.
What does Free vs Premium actually gate?
Free is the full browser app with workflow limits: G-code Sculptor export/save with up to two effects, SynthBlocks preview-only, no .3dsynth save, no G-code Inspector, no Julia Stack, no library publishing, no desktop. Premium is $39 USD one-time. Table: pricing and Free vs Premium.
